Dbx 266xl Dual Compressor Gate Dbx Dynamics Processors Recording Feature: Does everything you might reasonably ask of a basic compressor. The gain reduction meters are great for seeing how much compression is being applied. A dedicated limiter might be a useful addition. Quality: Solid and reliable. Value: Difficult to beat at this price [around 100 quid]. Desirability: Feels nice and has never let me down. Its a dbx. Sound: Once connected, it gets on with the job quietly and efficiently. Ease of Use: The controls are intuitive and setting up is straight forward. Overall: Having compared a few budget compressors, this one seems to have a sensible balance of features and price. Dbx 286a Microphone Processor Dbx Microphone Preamps Recording Feature: I run the mic direct and then patch into the line in on the mixer. The gate, compressor, & desser work great. Also, the enhancers really do add a certain sheen to your live vocals. A great piece. You dont really need an eq, leave that on your mixer channel (providing you have at least 4 bands and 2 are parametric) Quality: Not terribly pretty, but built well. The knobs have a solid feel. Top notch! Value: Before you consider buying a new mixer or expensive microphone, learn to use a 286, it may make you reconsider! Desirability: After using it, my respect grows and grows. I would buy it in a minute for my live work, but would seek out something else for my digital studio work. I dont use compression, gating, EQ, or dessing before I go into my computer. Once its there, I cant change it, so I do it all within the software or repatch and record again through the effect so nothing is too permanent. Sound: As an engineer I use 4 of these regularly. There is such a difference between the microphones and vocals with and without it. In live audio the 286 puts you in control. Great features and full on wonderful sound. Dbx 160a Compressor Limiter Dbx Dynamics Processors Recording Feature: Soft and hard knee compression worked the best for me. This is a top quality product you must have if youre a sound man. Unquestionably the best compressor Ive used. Quality: You gotta hear the sound; just remarkable the way it makes my mix sound. It saves my equipment too from zealous vocalist and musicians who think they sound good by singing and playing music too loud. The DBX just makes the mix sound better. Super top quality product. Value: The best if your on a budget or not. Desirability: Its ok; but Im more concerned with how a product works and the DBX 160A works well. Sound: I used it for the mains and wow, it does a super job at compressing peaks. I cant desrcibe the sound to as you have to listen to it because it sounded so good. People never knew I was using a compressor and thought I was a very good sound man. But give DBX credit too; what a super compressor. Ease of Use: At first I used recommended settings and it worked just fine. As I used it more, I had my own settings. Not hard to use at all. Support: I wouldnt know. This product worked so well I never needed support. Overall: Im sure there are other compressors that are good but Im very satisfied with the DBX. On the otherhand the customer service reps can guide you through set up assuming you call them during normal bankers hours Quality: The DBX was double boxed from my local dealer and has a nice professional finish. I feel as long as I keep it secured in my rack I will have no issues with it on the road. Value: you do the math of buying all these seperate processors. Sure makes troble shooting easier?? Sound: Sound Characteristics from a DJs point of view....The best purchase I ever made for my DJ rig. Gets the correct sound out hides or destoys 60HZ hum with a vengence. I use Yorkville Amps and Yorkville Elite Series 2108 subs and 2152 tops. I can but have not bi-amped the 2152s. I have never pushed this system beyond normal volume levels for fear of instant death.
